The 19thCentury pastor. Charles Spurgeon, once gave an analogy describing two people crossing the Atlantic Ocean from England to America. One was a strong, robust, and vigorous man, the other passenger was a little infant that could not walk, carried everywhere in his mother’s arms. Both the robust man and infant would reach their journey’s end in safety – if the ship does.

Their safety lies in the same place. Their condition does not affect their transit. The strong man could not swim across the Atlantic any more than the child could. They are alike incompetent for the passage if left alone, and alike capable of it if placed on board the same vessel.

The analogy of course describes how a great saint and a new convert to Christianity will both get to heaven: Not by their own personal achievements but by placing their faith in the vessel that is Jesus Christ.
